This guide is about building an online business in Pakistan, not just a website. The website is an afternoon; the business is the decisions around it. If you already know what you sell and just need the store set up, read how to start an online store in Pakistan instead — this page is the step before that.
Step 1 — Pick a product you can actually win at
The most common mistake is a general store selling a little of everything. It is harder to source, harder to photograph, harder to explain and impossible to become known for. Go narrow. "Unstitched lawn for women" beats "clothing"; "phone accessories" beats "electronics".
Before you fall in love with an idea, test it against three questions: can you restock it reliably, does it survive courier handling, and is the margin enough to absorb a return? A fragile, low-margin product will quietly drain you no matter how good the marketing.
Step 2 — Validate demand before you spend
Do not buy a warehouse of stock on a hunch. Prove people want it first, cheaply:
- Pre-sell on WhatsApp and Instagram. Post the product, take orders, then buy. If nobody orders, you just saved your capital.
- Test a small batch. Buy ten, not a hundred, and see how fast they go.
- Watch a marketplace. If identical items sell on Daraz, there is demand — the question is only whether you can compete.
Step 3 — Work out the numbers
Most online businesses do not fail from no sales — they fail from selling at a loss without noticing. Before you launch, know, per order:
- Cost of the product landed to you.
- Shipping and packaging — and who pays it, you or the customer.
- Expected returns. Cash on Delivery refusals cost you both shipping legs; build that into the price.
- Your profit per order after all of the above — and how many orders a month covers your costs.
If the profit per order is thin, a single refused COD parcel wipes out several good sales. Price for that reality.
Step 4 — Sort sourcing and suppliers
Your supplier is part of your business whether you like it or not. A cheap supplier who ships late or sends poor quality will cost you reviews and repeat customers.
- Test before you commit. Order from a supplier yourself and judge quality and dispatch speed as your customer will.
- Keep a backup. One supplier who goes quiet should not be able to stop your business.
- Agree terms in writing — price, minimum order, lead time — so there is no argument later.
Step 5 — Choose where to sell
You have three honest options, and the right one depends on whether you already have an audience.
| Channel | Best when | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Marketplace (Daraz) | You have no audience yet and need your first sales | Commission on every sale, and you never own the customer |
| Your own store | You want the full margin and a brand you control | You must bring the traffic yourself |
| Both | Most sellers who grow | A little more work to run two channels |
For most people the sensible path is both: the marketplace for discovery, your own store for repeat buyers where you keep the margin. We laid out the trade-off in full in your own store vs Daraz.
Step 6 — Set up payments and delivery
Cash on Delivery is still essential in Pakistan — many buyers want to see the product before paying, especially from a new seller. Offer it, but also offer JazzCash, Easypaisa and bank transfer, because a prepaid order is one that cannot be refused at the door.
Line up a courier — Leopards, PostEx and TCS are the common choices — and check two things: that they cover the cities you ship to, and how quickly they remit the COD cash they collect. That gap decides how much stock you can afford to keep buying.
Step 7 — Build your store and list products
This is the quick part. Build the store, add products with good daylight photos and honest descriptions, write your delivery and return policies plainly, and place a test order yourself before telling anyone. On a free plan with no commission on your sales, this costs you nothing until you are earning.
The full store checklist — photos, policies, the test order — is in how to start an online store in Pakistan.
Step 8 — Get your first customers and reinvest
Do not start with paid ads — you do not yet know which products sell or what a customer is worth, so you would be buying data at the worst price. Instead:
- Message your own WhatsApp contacts individually — family, friends, former colleagues.
- Post on your existing social accounts and WhatsApp status with real photos of real products.
- Ask every happy buyer for a photo or a line of feedback. Real reviews convert strangers better than any advert.
- Save every buyer's number and message them when new stock lands. Selling again to someone who already trusts you is nearly free.
- Reinvest early profit into more stock and wider reach before you think about ads.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to register a company to start an online business in Pakistan?
Most people start as an individual seller and register later once there is steady income. Whether and when you must register for tax depends on your turnover and your situation, so ask an accountant rather than guessing. What you genuinely need from day one is a reliable way to take payment and a reliable way to deliver — not paperwork.
How much money do I need to start an online business in Pakistan?
Less than most people think if you start with Cash on Delivery and a free store. Your real spend is inventory and packaging, and you can keep that small by buying a first batch only after you have seen real demand. The website itself can cost nothing to start on a free plan, so you are not paying monthly before you earn.
What is the best online business to start in Pakistan?
The best one is a narrow product you can source reliably, that survives courier handling, and that has enough margin to absorb a return. Clothing, unstitched fabric, beauty, phone and computer accessories, home and kitchen items and handmade goods all work for Pakistani sellers. "Best" is less about the category and more about whether you can restock it and make a profit per order after shipping.
Can I start an online business with no money?
You can build the store and list products for free, but you still need something to sell. If you have no capital for stock, start by pre-selling (take orders first, then buy), sell handmade items, or resell for a supplier who ships for you — and be honest with customers about delivery times. Avoid promising stock you cannot get.
Is dropshipping a good idea in Pakistan?
It can work, but it is harder than the adverts claim. With Cash on Delivery you carry the risk of refused parcels while depending on a supplier you do not control for quality and dispatch speed. If you try it, use a local supplier you have personally tested, start with a few orders, and check delivery and return rates before scaling.
How long before an online business makes money?
Expect a slow start. A steady trickle of orders within the first month or two is a genuinely good result; a full-time income usually takes longer and depends on reinvesting early profit into more stock and reaching more people. Anyone promising quick riches is selling you a course, not a business.
